Are you interested in running cross country? Have you received cross country information in the mail? Have you heard about cross country from someone else?

If you need more information you have come to the right place. The purpose of this page and website is to inform and answer questions that you may have about cross country.

Season: Cross country season begins August 14 and continues to October 21. We do suggest running during the summer. You can run with us or run at home. We meet at the KJHS parking lot every Monday-Wednesday-Thursday, 8:00 AM and travel a short distance for trail running. We usually return around 10:00 AM. We also run at Legends Field at the same time on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Summer training begins June 13. When official practice starts on August 14 we practice after school.

Competition: All runners compete when they are ready.  Races are three miles.  Most races are held on golf courses or in parks.  We travel to Missoula, Great Falls, Helena, Libby and Yakima.  All runners travel to meets if eligible.

Practice: 3:45-5:30 – Monday-Friday

Practice consists of long slow runs, intervals, speed training, running games and weight training and much more.  Coaches attempt to make practice fun.

Beginning Runners: Runners who are new to running have the opportunity to start slow and work up to faster pace. Practice distance varies but you determine distance.  Coaches treat runners individually and understand how to bring young runners along gradually.

Cross country is a high school activity that requires hard work and perseverance.  But cross country is also a place where students can achieve success and learn something from the process of training and competing.

No cut policy: Cross country does not cut runners. Most high profile activities cut runners but we don't. Every student can practice and compete, even when we go out of town.

What can cross country do for you? Read on!

Cross country is much more than just running.  Runners participate in social activities, get in great physical shape, have fun, and form new friendships.

Senior Elliot Welder explains what XC has done for him:

Cross Country has provided an environment in which I am able to pursue my goals without limitations, along with providing college opportunities that I never would have dreamed of having. Cross has provided me with friendships and experiences that I will cherish for the rest of my life.

BENEFITS OF RUNNING XC

  1. Develop endurance
  2. Form friendships
  3. Participate in a team sport
  4. Take part in fun activities
  5. Learn how to compete
  6. Learn how to set goals
  7. Develop self esteem
  8. Earn college scholarships
  9. Learn how to self motivate
  10. Gain strength for other sports

Cross-country requires hard work but the benefits are many.  Runners will lose weight, put on muscle and develop a lean look.  Running is an activity you can do your entire life.  Cross-country gets you off the couch doing something that can be fun and rewarding.

Most runners who try cross country find that it isn’t what they expected.  They find that running is difficult but can be fun and very rewarding.  Those that move out of their comfort zone will be rewarded by learning new things about themselves.
