FOR ALL INTERESTED XC RUNNERS ATTENDING FLATHEAD HIGH SCHOOL

Cross Country is an activity that involves running over hill and dale.  We compete against other high schools teams across the state.  We don’t cut runners and a stop watch determines the varsity team.  Is cross country hard?  Most of our runners would say no but they may say it is challenging.

Cross Country is much more than just running.  Runners participate in social activities, get in great physical shape, have fun, and form new friendships.

Cross Country benefits other activities
Running cross country gets you in shape for other activities. The following athletes all ran cross country and did well in other sports:  Shaun Lau, state champion in wrestling, TC Decker finalist state wrestling, Luke Cutler starting guard for the Braves, Linzi Reiersgard in swimming, Leif Castran freshman basketball, Bri Ori Bravette basketball.

Take a chance and try something new
Most runners who try cross country find that it isn’t what they expected. Most kids fear the unknown and are not willing to try new things.  Those that move out of their comfort zone will be rewarded by learning new things about themselves.  Most of the time what we learn in cross country is positive.

Get involved in school activities
Many students that get involved in activities form friendships with kids that normally they wouldn’t.  Students that attend rural schools and participate in high school activities have an advantage over students that don’t participate.  If you are involved in activities you will have less trouble fitting in with the school population.

Cross-country requires consistent training   but the benefits are many. Cross is an activity you can do your entire life.  Cross-country gets you off the couch doing something that can be fun and rewarding.

Competition: All runners compete when they are ready.  Races are three miles.  Most races are held on golf courses or in parks.  We travel to Missoula, Great Falls, Helena, Libby and Butte.  All runners travel to meets if eligible.

Practice: 3:30-5:30 – Monday-Friday

Practice consists of long slow runs, intervals, speed training, running games, weight training and much more.  Coaches attempt to make practice fun.

Beginning Runners: Runners who are new to running have the opportunity to start slow and work up to faster pace. Practice distance varies but you determine distance.  Coaches treat runners individually and understand how to bring young runners along gradually.

Summer Training:  If interested in summer training you can run trails with the team Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. We usually run trails out west of town at what we call the Pig Farm.

Summer Camp: We plan on having a cross country camp at Echo Lake on June 28th-30th
